Javier Sanchez Romano

Postdoctoral Fellow

Job description

Javier is a veterinary virologist employed in the SECVIR project. In this project, he is studyin the role of the liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) as a central player in the cellular arm of the anti-viral innate immune system. In other words, how LSECs take up and eliminate virus from the blood stream. At the same time, Javier has been involved in teaching (MBI-2104 and MBI-3014) and supervision of students.

Besides his work at the Vascular Biology research group, he is a collaborator in the NORHED II project "Climate Change and Infectious Diseases - A One Health Approach (CIDIMOH)" project for the period 2021-2026, which aims to address climate change and infection biology in Uganda and South Sudan. Javier is also a collaborator in the NFR project "Animal welfare, behaviour, health and sustainability – the effects of feeding on reindeer and reindeer herding", which will investigate the short- and long-term effects of supplementary feeding of semi-domesticated reindeer. He has also received a grant from the University of the Arctic with the aim to develop a master's level course in One Health in Northern Communities and Ecosystems.

    Research interests

Javier's main research interests are infection biology and virology. He has a collaborative scientific background focused on infection biology (human and nonhuman) in the circumpolar north, but he is also interested in education and the necessity of a holistic approach to health and the development of the One Health concept in the Arctic.

His involvement in the SECVIR project is helping him to develop his skills further, including infection biology, virus propagation and purification, molecular biology or advance microscopy.
