autumn 2017 ENG-3193 Literature, Text and Education - 10 ECTS
Course content
This course focuses on profound studies of a number of English texts that relate to education in a variety of ways, for example intellectual significance, social impact and historical importance, as well as in theme, content, form and current interests. The close reading of these texts develops aesthetic sensitivity and hermeneutic capacity within a wider framework of theoretical approaches to literature and text, contextual knowledge and educational concerns. The dilemma of aesthetic autonomy and contextual discourses constitutes a continuous point of debate and reference for the course. Students are required, in cooperation with the course organiser, to select one major text and relevant study material within the research framework of the course. Professional practice, training or internship, as well as syllabus from didactics and pedagogics, can be part of the designed syllabus and research. Syllabi, assignments and professional training provide the basis for a term project that is to be presented and discussed in the oral exam.Objectives of the course

- academic competence in relating a specific research discipline to other academic arenas.
- an advanced understanding of the purposes of specific texts, of general text theory and of their multiple functions in education and society.
Skills:
The students are able to:
- master appropriate terminology and relevant concepts.
- work independently on a specific question of literary, cultural or educational enquiry.
- locate relevant academic sources on a specific research topic.
- evaluate critically different sources and make use of them for their own research design and analysis.
- apply theoretical knowledge and use practical tools to analyse specific research topics in literature and texts
- conduct an independent, limited research project on a small scale under supervision.
- present their research and their findings in a variety of venues and media to different types of audiences.
- contribute creatively and critically to further research development and research.
Teaching methods
The course is based on independent studies, lectures, seminars and digital communication for 13 weeks. The course convenes once a week for a number of 8-10 weeks in order for student presentations, seminars, supervision, lectures and other types of academic research activity.
Quality assurance:
At the master's level, all courses undergo a mid-term evaluation once in a 2-year period. The Programme Board determines which programmes will be evaluated per year, and which courses will be evaluated by the students and the teacher each year.
Assessment
The following coursework requirements must be approved in order to take the exam:
- A presentation of person in social media in 200-400 words.
- An analysis of a text on syllabus in social media in 400-600 words.
- Assessment of another student¿s text analysis according to a selection of relevant criteria that need to be established
- A short written justification of chosen text in 600-800 words.
- A mini-presentation of the multitextual term project in class.
Assignments will be graded as pass or fail. Failed assignments need to be reworked and approved. The exam consists of:
Oral examination:
A 20 minutes presentation of the term project that creates a point of departure for an approximately 25 minutes discussion of the term project. Presentation and discussion count equally much towards the final grade.
The oral exam will be assessed on an A-F grades scale. Grades are A-E for passed and F for failed.
A re-sit examination is offered in the event of an F grade. The deadline to register for a re-sit examination is January 15th for the autumn semester and August 15th for the spring semester.

Primary texts:Sherman Alexie: The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, J.M Coetzee: Disgrace, Mark Haddon: The Curious Incident of the Fog in the Night Time, Sarah Kane: Cleansed.
Students need to choose a text according to their own research and professional training from a longer list to be provided. Student selections need to be justified and approved. Students are recommended to compose a list of secondary reading from other relevant disciplines in their academic background; didactics, psychology, ethics, history, literary theory. Suggested secondary material will be presented at term start.
