autumn 2017 ENG-2010 Comparative Syntax of English - 10 ECTS

Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

This course may be taken as a single course. A good command of oral and written English is required.

Course content

This course takes up selected important aspects of English syntax and their analysis, and compares them to the syntax of other languages. An understanding of syntax contributes greatly to clarity of writing and speaking and is essential to anyone who would help others to improve their use of English.

The student has:

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with important aspects of English grammar and its analysis. By the end of the course, students will have gained an improved understanding of the underlying structure of English, how pronouns and their reference work, the various movements present in English.

Skills

The student is able to / can:

  •  the ability to identify the core syntactic constructions discussed in the course and outline their structure
  •  the ability to apply analytic tools to additional constructions, to gain a fuller understanding of their structure
  • Give an in depth discussion from a theoretical perspective of one particular linguistic phenomenon in English and its relationship to parallel phenomena in the other languages, such as Norwegian, German, Romance and Slavic languages.


Language of instruction and examination

Language of instruction and examination is English.

Teaching methods

Autumn 2016: Four hours of lectures or seminars per week (for 7 weeks).

Quality assurance: The course undergoes a midterm evaluation or an end-of-term evaluation every third year.


Assessment

The following coursework requirements must be completed and approved in order to take the final exam: 

Coursework requirements: There will be obligatory coursework assignments in the course of the semester.  Obligatory coursework is evaluated as approved/not approved. The obligatory coursework requirements must be approved in order to take the final exam.

Assessment method: A written final paper at the end of the semester in Wiseflow as a home exam.

Performance in the course will be assessed on the usual A-F grade scale (A-E for pass and F for fail). A re-sit examination is offered in the event of an F grade.

The deadline to register for a re-sit examination is January 15th for the autumn semester and August 15th for the spring semester.
