Havforskermøte 2024 in Tromsø - sign up by Oct 31st!

The annual meeting of the Norwegian Association of Marine Scientists (Havforskermøtet) will this year take place in Tromsø 25-27 November at Clarion Hotel the Edge. This year’s theme is "Effects of climate change and climate mitigation measures on marine ecosystems". As usual, we also welcome presentations on other topics within marine research.

The meeting will focus on effects on climate change in the ocean, and on the consequences of climate mitigation measures such as offshore wind and deep sea mining on marine life. This year’s theme is highly relevant for researchers and students who work with various aspects of climate change and climate measures on marine nature. We will invite relevant experts from various disciplines and institutions to create a broad conversation about trade-offs between technological solutions to the climate crisis and what this entails in terms of areal use and other environmental costs.

We can support accommodation (but not travel) for some students. We practice a first come first served practice for the hotel package with 50 rooms blocked, so register early to secure a room.

About the program

Monday afternoon at 17.00 we start with the annual meeting of Norsk Havforskerforening.  Then at 19.00, we follow up with an open meeting on 'Climate, ocean ecosystems and energy transition' where we have a strong panel to enlighten us and discuss trade-offs emerging from human activity in the ocean.  Panelists: Marit Reigstad - Professor with expertise in arctic marine ecosystems - from UiT The Arctic University of Norway; Stig-Morten Knutsen - geologist in Norwegian Offshore Directorate and member of United Nations Economic Commision for Europe/Expert Group on Resource Management – UNECE/EGRM; and Ebbe Hartz - geologist in Aker BP. This public meeting will be in Norwegian, while the rest of the programme will be held in English.

On Tuesday we have a session on The green shift and ocean life? How climate mitigation actions influence marine ecosystems - followed by open sessions and a poster session.

On Wednesday, we start with the session  Ocean warming and marine life – how do organisms adapt to climate change? and then more open sessions. The meeting finish around 15:30.
