Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:

This thesis examines how contemporary camera-based artistic practices sense and investigate the Arctic and the circumpolar North in terms of environmental destruction, gender, and colonial legacies. I argue that the artworks I examine make the viewer aware about stories that have been downplayed, ignored, overlooked, or formerly made inaccessible to the public. In many cases the “missing” stories form the basis for an imagining and a fabulation about worlds that could have existed or are yet to come. In others, the artists’ works are a means to come to terms with worlds that have been destroyed. Oftentimes long-term research and employment of photography become important elements in the artistic practices that I investigate. The thesis further argues that environmental destruction, gender, and colonial legacies are entangled with one another, but that they need to be examined separately to understand what is at stake. The three independent articles that the thesis is built on, with its in-depth examinations of the work of Himali Singh Soin, Tonje Bøe Birkeland and Pia Arke, reflect this approach.
