Collaboration across borders at Arctic Frontiers

Beyond Borders is the theme of Arctic Frontiers 2025. UiT is making its mark in the scientific, political and open programme – on vital issues that transcend borders and require cooperation.

About UiT Arctic International cooperation

When researchers, politicians, bureaucrats and interest organisations gather in Tromsø from January 27th to 30th, they will meet the full scope of research from UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

Our leaders and researchers will talk about and discuss the issues that matters in the Arctic, and therefore globally. More than 60 staff and students will be in action, and UiT is organising 14 of the sessions in the programme, either alone or together with others.

Discussions for the future

An important issue for UiT to discuss is the Arctic Ocean 2050-project, a gigantic joint investment in research in our northern regions. The prosject fits in well with The International Polar Year in 2032-33, and Dean Jørgen Berge will be presenting the Norwegian research programme at the session International Polar Year (IPY) V: Research, Data and Science Cooperation.

Rector Dag Rune Olsen will also be at the conference, and in between all the meetings he will give a presentation at Stronger together - Nordic collaboration in the Arctic.

Indigenous perspectives across borders and how to strengthen Arctic communities are also important issues for UiT, which are discussed in several sessions, including Indigenous Leadership in Research and Arctic Communities Amid Geopolitical and Economic Uncertainty.

In addition, UiT is involved in discussions about toxic metals in the Arctic, sustainable food security in the oceans, Russian influence, strategic communication in the North, mental health, energy and climate modelling.

You can watch more than 60 sessions on Arctic Frontiers' YouTube channel, completely free of charge, including all the sessions mentioned above, or, for example, Russia Talks: Arctic Narratives and Arctic Influence or Safeguarding Our Common Waters Beyond Borders: Why is the High Seas Treaty Important for the Future of the Arctic?

Open events for everyone

At Arctic Fromtiers you can attend a number of open events.

Marit Anne Hauan, director of the Polar Museum, and literature professor Henning Howlid Wærp will discuss the female gaze in polar regions at Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum on Wednesday 29 January at 19:45.

Historian Stian Bones will take part in the podcast Det store bildet (The Big Picture) together with, among others, the leader of the Conservative Party, Erna Solberg. The recording is part of Pro Tromsø's "Business & Burger" event. Unfortunately, the event is full, but keep an eye on the podcast feed.

A place where UiT can create new collaborations

Arctic Frontiers is an arena for meeting other institutions and countries, and 2025 is no exception. UiT will have meetings with the EU's new Arctic ambassador and the EU's Directorate-General for Maritime Policy and Fisheries, the fisheries ministers from Norway and the Faroe Islands, Chile's ambassador, India's National Security Council Secretariat and Italy's ambassador and their polar institute.
