Empowering Future Educators: – GENerative AI for Inclusive and Ethical Early Childhood Education (GENIAL)
This project aims to integrate Generative AI into early childhood education (ECEC) by equipping in-service teachers with pedagogical frameworks, tools, and skills. It emphasizes ethical AI use, inclusivity, and critical thinking, preparing educators to foster creativity, problem-solving, and digital literacy with young learners while ensuring responsible and effective AI integration in early education.
Project Overview
GENIAL is a transnational research and development project that addresses one of the most pressing questions in contemporary early childhood education: how can artificial intelligence be integrated ethically, pedagogically, and inclusively into young children’s learning environments?
Grounded in research, policy, and practice, GENIAL brings together higher education institutions, researchers, teacher educators, and early childhood professionals to develop a robust, scalable framework for responsible AI use in early childhood education and care (ECEC). The project runs from September 2025 to August 2027 and combines theoretical work, empirical research, pilot implementation, and digital platform development into a coherent and sustainable whole .
A Holistic and Research-Based Approach
At the core of GENIAL is a holistic, multi-systemic perspective inspired by Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory. Children’s encounters with AI are understood not as isolated technological events, but as experiences shaped by interactions between children, educators, families, institutions, policies, and wider cultural values. This perspective allows the project to address AI in early childhood across multiple levels—from everyday pedagogical practice to institutional governance and national policy frameworks
By combining ethical considerations, pedagogical theory, and empirical data from diverse European contexts, GENIAL ensures that AI integration supports children’s learning, well-being, inclusion, and rights, rather than undermining them.
Key future results and impact
GENIAL delivers concrete outcomes with relevance at local, national, and international levels:
-
Ethical AI Guidelines that safeguard children’s rights, well-being, and agency
-
Pedagogical and implementation frameworks supporting educators in everyday practice
-
Inclusive education recommendations addressing accessibility, diversity, and equity
-
Policy guidance for institutions and decision-makers shaping AI regulation in ECEC
-
A scalable, adaptable model suitable for diverse educational and cultural contexts
-
A digital platform supporting long-term access, dissemination, and professional learning
Through continuous evaluation, educator involvement, and cross-national collaboration, GENIAL contributes both to research knowledge and to practical capacity-building in early childhood education.
Why GENIAL Matters
As AI becomes increasingly present in children’s everyday lives, early childhood education requires clear, research-informed, and ethically grounded guidance. GENIAL responds to this need by bridging theory, policy, and practice. The project strengthens professional digital competence, supports educators’ decision-making, and helps ensure that AI technologies are used in ways that enhance—rather than replace—human relationships, play, and learning in early childhood settings.
