Mathematics is central to science, technology and to many careers, yet many students arrive at university with a difficult relationship to the subject. LAUMA studies why, and what can be done about it, by combining three perspectives that rarely meet:

• Mathematics itself – what it means to understand a mathematical idea, and how mathematicians think about their subject.
• Psychology – attitudes, motivation, self-efficacy and the social factors that shape how students engage with mathematics.
• Education – how mathematics is taught and learned, from upper secondary school through university.

The initiative started in 2020 as a collaboration between the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Psychology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and is supported by the Tromsø Research Foundation (TFS).
