Learn to learn

More about the project

The project Learning to learn is happening in two places:

  1. in the common first-semester course for health profession students, HEL-0700
  2. in the mentoring programs at the BFE and HSL faculties.

HEL-0700

Since 2023, Learning to Learn has been a dedicated module in the course HEL-0700: Collaboration, Ethics, and Basic Academic Skills in Health and Social Sciences. Each fall, 600 students at campus Tromsø are involved. Oda Bjørnsdatter, as the course coordinator, was the project leader for the development of the module until the fall of 2025.

Prior to the first implementation, we established a reference group consisting of several competent educators and students: former HEL-0700 student Sondre Richardson/ParamedicineMagnus Ingebrigtsen/Department of Psychology/Faculty of Health SciencesMaarten Bereepoot/Department of Chemistry/Faculty of Science and Technology, Ingvild Lorentzen/Section for Learning Environment and Educational QualityJanne Mjelle/Department of Pharmacy/Faculty of Health Sciences, and former HEL-0700 student Trine Melinda Vollan/Medicine..
We have also greatly benefited from advice provided by Professor Mark McDaniel/Center for Integrative Research on Cognition, Learning, and Education (CIRCLE) at Washington University in St. Louis. Each year, we collect data from students at the beginning and end of the course, asking about their use of learning strategies and other relevant measures for research purposes.

Mentoring Programs

Starting in January 2025, we have developed a dedicated training module for student mentors and mentor coordinators to help them support students in the effective use of learning strategies. The project is funded by the Program for Quality in Education at UiT. The project leader is Ingvild Lorentzen.

Here too, we have an active reference group: Trine Holm Larsen/BFE, Robin Lien/Faculty of Law, formerly HSL, Elisabeth Sandersen/HSL. The mentors have been/are represented by Emma Velle, Ane Gangsøy Kjæreng og Johanne Galschjødt Nilssen/BFE, Thomas Dale Malones and Live Mjølnerud/HSL. Mark Stenersen/Result has contributed to the development of a promotional video and online solution.
