Visual perception and aesthetics

The objective of this project is to explore how perceptual factors and image statistics can affect aesthetic experience.

Whether something is experienced as beautiful or not depends on the individual. But there is also a systematic relationship between the experience of beauty and more "objective" factors, like visual contrast, symmetry, object size, and the ease of visual processing. So in a sense, in addition to being subjective, beauty is quite literally in the eye of the beholder.

The project will focus on spatial frequency and color. More specifically, we will develop measures related to color perception (contrast, entropy, spectral slope) based on a more physiologically plausible color space (compared to the often used CIELAB space).
