Privaton is a collaborative effort between Department of Computer Science at UiT -Arctic University of Norway, Department of Computer Science at Cornell University (USA), and Simula Research Laboratory (Oslo). The project is lead from Tromsø, Norway, by Associate Professor Håvard D. Johansen.
Om Privaton (norsk) Hver dag deler vi våre personlige data med elektroniske og nettbaserte tjenester. Vi laster opp bilder og hjemmevideoer, handlelister og strømforbruk. I takt med den rivende utviklingen av tingenes internett, smarthus og sensorteknologi til hjemmebruk, vil størrelsen på vårt digitale fotavtrykk bare fortsette å øke i årene som kommer. |
About Privaton (english) Every day we share large quantities of personal data with online services and data brokers. Frequently, we upload everything from photos and home videos to shopping lists, positional data, electrical consumption profiles, and health information. And we do that fun little test on Facebook that tells you which kind of potato you are. This is our digital footprint. Businesses, governments, and other organizations can use, sell and purchase this data to develop and provide us with improved and usefull services. Many of these services we depend on in our daily activities, like Google Search and the Facebook news stream, and some we appricate less like the noisy ad for something you googled three days ago. As emerging technologies for self-monitoring, smart cities, and the Internet-of-Things advance in the years to come, our digital footprint will continue to grow. This research project will develop fundamental technology enabling a stronger level of individual control over our digital footprints. Our approach is to attach to all shared data a dynamic privacy automaton*, or privaton, that algoritmically regulate data usage. Privatons follow behavioural models (i.e. it is a state machine) that express privacy policies in response to how, and for what purpose, data is used. Our goal is to enable the online services to make good use of our data, while at the same time preventing them from violating national and international data-usage regulations, and individual wishes for privacy. *Automaton: a mechanism that is relatively self-operating (for example a robot), a machine or control mechanism designed to follow automatically a predetermined sequence of operations or respond to encoded instructions. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/automaton |
