Transforming ocean surveying by the power of DL and statistical methods

Outreach

The project collaborates with The Scientific Centre of Northern Norway, where we, in collaboration with SFI Visual Intelligence Centre, have developed an exhibition with activities at the Science Centre with the aim of increasing the population's knowledge about statistics and deep learning in general. We focus on developing interesting, challenging and motivating tasks for the visitors of all ages, but in particular tasks relevant for kids and youths are prioritized. Our aim here is twofold. Firstly, we would like to increase their knowledge about statistics and machine learning in general. Secondly, we think the present project represents an excellent example of how the combination of machine learning/statistics, ICT and geoscience can lead to outputs crucial for companies and the understanding of Earth's past, present, and future climate and environmental conditions. We strongly believe that this can also contribute to strengthen recruitment of students in science educations in the future. At a later stage of the project, when important results are obtained, we also plan to present the outcome at Forskningsdagene, an arena initiated by the Norwegian Research Council, where research results are popularized to the Norwegian population.

The official opening of the exhibition will take place 22.Sep at the Science Centre of Northern Norway (Åpen_dag_pa_vitensenteret_og_universitetsbiblioteket) (facebook.com/events/Åpen_dag) in connection with “Åpen dag på Vitensenteret og Universitetsbiblioteket”
