Project progress
Nearly halfway through the project period, the project’s development work is on schedule.
A systematic literature review has been conducted and published in the journal Nurse Education in Practice. The review identifies existing research and best practices in XR and AI in health professions education. The findings provide an understanding of the current evidence base and knowledge gaps, particularly regarding the pedagogical foundations of applications in nursing education. This knowledge has informed the development of the curriculum design and the scenarios in the project.
Scripts have also been developed for two clinical scenarios. These have been adapted to meet technological requirements, user interaction design considerations, and pedagogical aspects. One scenario concerns cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a hospital setting, while the other concerns palliative care at home in a Sami context. Healthcare professionals, students, cultural experts, and technologists have collaborated to ensure clinical relevance, usability, and cultural sensitivity.
The pedagogical framework has also been developed. It is based on principles of self-regulated and socially regulated learning and supports adaptive, experiential, and reflective learning processes. Through a three-level adaptive structure, students receive personalised, flexible, real-time support based on their individual competencies and learning needs.
The three-dimensional environments for the scenarios have been developed in close collaboration between technologists and educators, and work to refine these environments is still ongoing. The avatars have also been developed, along with a local language model that ensures safe, contextually relevant dialogue aligned with the learning outcomes of the scenarios.
Testing and adjustments are currently underway to prepare the scenarios for student piloting in autumn 2027.
