Housing in the private market

The student housing situation is especially in Tromsø very dire, therefore housing is guaranteed only to visa-seeking students for immigration reasons. Other students will be selected randomly until the housing quota for international students is filled.

We strongly recommend that students who were not allocated student housing through The Arctic Student Welfare Organisation in Tromsø to consider the private market:

  • Bolighjelpa Bolighjelp is a service of the Student Welfare Organisation.
  • Housing Anywhere: A cooperation with the International Office to help students to find housing while abroad on exchange programme.

Why choose Tromsø?

Tromsø. Paris of the North, gateway to the Arctic, warm people, cold winter nights, city of nightlife, outdoor paradise, Midnight Sun, Polar Night, Northern Lights and a mini metropolis. No matter who you are, there is no lack of possibilities to enjoy yourself.

It is important to enjoy your studies, but it is no less important to like the city you are living in. Tromsø is the largest city in Northern Norway, a modern urban centre with a population of more than 70,000. It is a multicultural community full of friendly northerners, newly arrived students and people from around the world. Tromsø is renowned for its good student environment and offers broad study possibilities. A compact campus provides opportunities for you to find new friends from all over the world and with different interests.

Urban culture - wild nature

Tromsø excites both city addicts and nature freaks. Events such as the Tromsø International Film Festival (TIFF), the Northern Lights Festival and other cultural festivals will provide you with plenty of opportunities to enjoy yourself. You will also find a multitude of student groups hosting activities on campus and in downtown Tromsø. The student-run cultural centre DRIV arranges lots of concerts and features a student café. The student sports centre KRAFT offers a broad range of indoor sports.

Owing to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream, Tromsø is milder than most other places located on the same latitude. The average winter temperature is around -4.5 ˚C. The spectacular Arctic nature allows for many outdoor activities, including hiking, climbing, rafting, skiing, snowboarding, kayaking, fishing, dog sledding and whale watching. Tromsø is a splendid starting point for nature-based experiences year-round.

DEBUT WEEK brings people together

Debut Week is an excellent starting point for meeting new people. The first two weeks of the autumn semester are dedicated to inspiring the city, making new friends for life and doing great things together with experience buddies and other new students. Concerts, tours, courses, grilling, sports events, boot camp and party.

UiT in Tromsø - centre of North Norwegian education and research

Campus Tromsø is the administrative centre of UiT. It is the oldest and largest campus and educates around 9,500 students. We offer more than 20 English-taught master's degree programmes and host around 350 exchange students per year. Six of UiT's eight faculties are located in Tromsø.

Tromsø is gaining increased international attention as a capital of the High North and has become an important meeting place for Arctic decision makers. The permanent secretariat of the Arctic Council was established in Tromsø in 2012. The city also hosts the Fram High North Research Centre for Climate and the Environment with 20 research institutions affiliated, of which UiT is the largest institution.
