Sammendrag av avhandlingen / Summary of the thesis:

The study proposes a hybrid Computational Fluid Dynamics - Machine Learning model for prediction of icing rates due to freezing sea spray, ‘SPICE’. When a wave impacts a ship or a structure, a spray of tiny sea water droplets is formed. In negative temperatures, these droplets freeze upon impact on the surface of a vessel or structure. Freezing sea spray accounts for 80-90% of all offshore icing incidents. In severe conditions, lopsided icing loads can lead to structural failure or capsizing. Prediction of sea spray icing helps in mitigating its dangers by allowing to take precautionary measures and for design optimization. SPICE is capable of predicting icing rates and the spatial distribution of icing on the surface of structures and any arbitrary moving vessel.
