Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis:

The aim was to assess determinants and consequences of obesity in a Russian population using the data of the Know Your Heart Study (KYH, 2015-2018, N=4495, 35-69 years). Compared with Tromsø 7 study, obesity prevalence was similar in Russian and Norwegian men but higher in Russian women because of the steeper increase with age. If assessed using six existing indices, obesity prevalence in the KYH participants was the highest according to the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) >0.5 (75.8% in men and 65.0% in women). In women, but not in men, WHtR had the closest associations with hypertension and a combination of at least two of the three cardiometabolic disorders: hypertension, diabetes type 2, hypercholesterolemia. Besides, WHtR in women exhibited stronger associations with age, higher education, blood pressure, C-reactive protein and HDL cholesterol. Therefore, WHtR is suitable and recommended for abdominal obesity screening and early CVD risk identification, especially in Russian women.
