MUS-3412 Composition and arrangement - 30 ECTS

Optional course in the Master program in music performance. Cannot be taken as a stand-alone course.

MUS-3112 Composition and arranging 30 ects

Course content

Work with free composition and electroacoustic music, as well as composition, arrangement, and orchestration according to the student's chosen genre and master's project.

The course can be adjusted to a certain extent to meet the student's individual needs and those of their master's project.


Objectives of the course

After completing the course the student will have the following competences:

Knowledge

  • an insight into the knowledge and skills required to write and arrange compositions/arrangements for different ensembles

Skills

  • ability to make use of composition and arrangement skills and artistic working methods to create an artistic expression and an aesthetic intention

Competencies

  • ability to compose and/or arrange for different ensembles within the student's choice of genre
  • ability to make use of digital and electroacoustic technologies in composition
  • critically and reflectively articulate and discuss relevant issues both within the academic context and with audiences.

Language of instruction and examination

English and Norwegian

Teaching methods

Instruction is a combination of classroom teaching and individual supervision with the student's own compositions, artistic reflections, and exercises.

Notation software such as Finale or Sibelius will be used.

A significant amount of independent individual work with composition/arrangement and projects is required, with supervision and follow-up from teachers.

The student will produce compositions/arrangements in different formats and for different types of performers and ensembles and will record their works.

Some of the compositions and arrangements will be performed in public.

The student's work will be collected in a portfolio.

1. Public performance of own compositions and arrangements

The performance will consist of:

  • at least two public performances of compositions and arrangements by agreement with the supervisor, one of which will include an oral introduction to the work and a follow-up discussion

The candidate will submit a selection of their works with accompanying score/s, recordings, and written reflections with explanations.

The portfolio will consist of:

  • the candidate's own works with a total duration of at least 30 minutes. Exemptions can be made for particularly challenging work/s

Each composition/arrangement must include a recording, score, and written reflection (1 page).


Re-sit examination

In the case of a fail grade, a resit examination will be available in the next semester.
