Arctic Ocean 2050

Research for a sustainable ocean management

Climate change is fundamentally transforming the Arctic. By 2050, the Arctic Ocean will have changed from a white to a blue ocean during summer. The warming extends from the upper atmosphere to the deep sea, impacting weather patterns, ocean circulation, ecosystems, and human activities. The winter sea ice will become thinner, and more navigable, than a few decades ago. These transformations will intensify with continued climate change, creating new knowledge needs for society at large. The growing interest among commercial and political stakeholders underscores the necessity for, and value of international collaboration and coordinated research efforts to ensure a sustainably managed Arctic.
