Admission procedures for foreign applicants
I- APPLICANT CATEGORIES

1- International degree applicants: This means all one-year programmes, bachelor and master applicants with basic education from outside the Nordic countries and without advanced Norwegian language.

2- Foreign degree-applicants residing in Norway: This category covers all foreign applicants residing in Norway on work visa, Study Permit, Protection (Refugee Status), Permanent Residency and Marriage/Family visa.

3- Foreign applicants with advanced Norwegian language proficiency: You can apply to undergraduate and graduate programmes if you can document that you are already proficient in Norwegian language on advanced level. In addition, you must meet the admission requirements and the specific entry requirements for each programme of study.
NB! There are no preparatory courses in Norwegian language available for admission within this category. You must organize any such preparatory courses in Norwegian language on your own.

4- Admission to Norwegian Language and Society for Foreign Students at UiT in Narvik: Please note that admission to this one-year programme is primarily intended for foreign students who wish to qualify for Norwegian-taught bachelor's degree in engineering or the master's degree in Integrated Building Technology at the Faculty of Engineering Science and Technology in Narvik.

5- Nordic applicants: This category covers applicants who are nationals of Denmark (including Faroe Islands and Greenland), Finland, Iceland and Sweden.

6- Norwegian applicants: This category covers Norwegian citizens with basic education from outisde the Nordic countries.

7- Freemover/module-course applicants: This category covers bachelor, master and PhD applicants who intend to apply for singular courses taught in English or Norwegian.

8- Inbound student mobility: This category covers all inbound bachelor, master, PhD, Fulbright and placement/internship students from our parter institutions with whom we have formal agreements.

9- PhD education: This category includes all students who have already completed their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and plan to apply for a full PhD programme at UiT.

10- Guest researchers: This category includes scholar from an institution who would like to visit UiT and is planning to teach, lecture, or perform research on a topic the visitor is valued for.
NB! Please read the information on this website carefully before applying for admissions to UiT. Applying to a wrong category or within an incorrect deadline will result in the rejection of your application.
II - HOW TO APPLY

Undergraduate degrees taught in Norwegian (bachelor’s and one-year programmes): You can apply to these programmes if you can document that you are already proficient in Norwegian language on advanced level. In addition, you must meet the admission requirements and the specific entry requirements for each programme.

Graduate degrees taught in Norwegian (master’s programmes): You can apply to these programmes if you can document that you are already proficient in Norwegian language on advanced level. In addition, you must meet the admission requirements and the specific entry requirements for each programme.

7- Freemover / single-module applicants (bachelor, master and PhD levels)
EU and foreign applicants residing in Norway can apply for singular module courses taught in English or Norwegian. Bachelor's and master's level applicants must satisfy Norwegian language proficiency in addition to the admission requirements for module courses.
For singular module courses at the PhD level, we accept applicants from all countries. There are two ways to qualify for singular courses at the PhD level. The first is by documenting that you are currently an active PhD student at an accredited institution of higher learning somewhere in the world by submitting a written confirmation from your institution. The second way is to document knowledge in English that equates to the English requirement in The Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification and either a 3 year (180 ECTS) Bachelor’s degree + a 2 year (120 ECTS) Master’s degree or an integrated 5 year (300 ECTS) Master’s degree. Degrees must be documented by submitting both the diploma, diploma supplement (if one was issued) and transcript of records. The application code is “9301 – Singular courses at the PhD level” and the application deadline is on the 1st of December for courses that are taught in the spring semester and on the 1st of June for courses that are taught in the fall semester.

8- Inbound Student Mobility (bachelor, master, placement/internship and PhD)
All exchange/trainee student whether on bachelor, master or PhD levels must be nominated electronically through an established institutional agreement. NB! Without a formal agreement in place, we can not accept your application or enrol you as an active student at UiT.

10- PhD education
Applications to our PhD-Programmes are handled by the faculties, and early contact to the academic environment is strongly adviced. In addition to the academic scrutiny of the application, the Faculty will assess the financial frame for completion of the study.
Intake of PhD-students may either be through positions announced by the university, by positions at partner instutions and entreprises, or through scholarships and other financial arrangements.
