Study biomedicine in Tromsø! We offer training in contemporary and experimental methods, and give you professional supervision on writing and presenting a master thesis.

We offer teaching on topics such as cancer, heart function and failure, inflammatory disorders, immunity, bacterial colonization and antimicrobial resistance etc. You will be qualified for work in research and development within the biomedical sciences, and clinical laboratory sciences. You will have career options related to the translation of knowledge and methods of medical subjects, and bioprospecting. The masters' degree will also make you qualified for PhD programs.

The Master's program in Biomedicine will shed light on contemporary problems and methods in biomedicine. You will be trained in experimental work as well as written and oral presentations of independent scientific papers.

We offer a high quality laboratory course (MBI-3010), where you will be trained in cell culturing, detection and expression of DNA, RNA and proteins, imaging, electron microscopy, histological analysis and immunohistochemistry. You will also be trained in health and safety procedures in laboratories.

After passing the laboratory course you will start working on your master project. You will work under supervision alongside our researchers in one of our research groups. We offer an international research-environment with researchers from all corners of the world. Your specialization will be chosen according to the project you choose to work with. Your project thus will be based on research performed by one of the researchgroups at the Department of Medical Biology (IMB). You are expected to do individual research under supervision. The Master's thesis is expected to be an independent body of scientific work performed and presented by each student.

The Master's degree Program of Biomedicine is two years in length, and a total of 120 ECTS (see Table 1). Approximately two-thirds of the program, 70 ECTS focus on academic specialization. The remaining 50 ECTS are used to specialize in various areas of biomedicine.

When you have completed the Masterprogram in biomedicine, you are expected to have advanced and comprehensive knowledge of biomedical methodology, theories, concepts and scientific approaches specified by the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge
As a Master in Biomedicine you should understand biological processes at the organ, cellular and molecular level and have advanced knowledge in biomedicine within one of the following disciplines offered:

- Cancer biology
- Cardiovascular biology
- Genes and genomics
- Immunology
- Medical pharmacology and toxicology
- Microbiology
- Molecular inflammation
- Molecular pathology
- RNA biology
- Stem Cell Aging and Cancer
- Vascular biology

Skills

As a Master in biomedicine you are able to:

- Formulate relevant research questions in an independent manner.
- Understand, perform and explain basic biomedical laboratory techniques.
- Apply theories, concepts and methods pursuant to the scientific and ethical standards in the field.
- Analyse and assess biomedical research in a critical manner.
- Communicate biomedical sciences both orally and in writing.

General proficiency

As a Master in biomedicine you:

- Have acquired specialized expertise in one of the disciplines offered.
- Have the competence to work independently to plan and pursue experimental approaches to solve biomedical research problems.
- Can apply their knowledge and skills in biomedical theory and methods in new areas relevant to society.
- Have sufficient competence to participate in and to evaluate research projects or to advance to doctoral studies.

Admission to the programme requires a 3-year bachelor's degree (180 ECTS) or equivalent qualification in Biomedicine. An additional requirement is specialization in biomedical topics (i.e. biochemistry, bioinformatics, cell-and molecular biology, human physiology, immunology, microbiology and pharmacology) worth a minimum of 80 ECTS. For admission students will also have to document completed practical laboratory courses in biochemistry, cell and/or molecular biology comprising a minimum of 100 hours.

Applicants with a degree in Biomedical laboratory sciences ("Bioingeniør") must have have their degree recognized as equivalent to a Norwegian degree in laboratory sciences by NOKUT. Applicants also need authorization with the Norwegian authorization board as a qualified Bioingeniør. It is also recommended that students with a degree in Biomedical laboratory sciences have an additional 20 credits with specialization in biomedical topics.

Bachelor of Pharmacy, Medicine or Dentistry does not fulfil the admission requirements.

A combination of teaching and assessment forms is used, including lectures, project reports, experimental and laboratorial assignments.

Depending on your Master's project you may have the opportunity to spend one semester studying abroad.
