General information

The Norwegian Directorate of Norwegian Immigration (UDI) requires that that you either apply for a Study Permit (Non-EU) or register with the Police if you are staying more than three months in Norway (EU/EEA/Swiss citizens).

Students categories:

  1. Non-EU/Swiss Students: This means all students who are nationals of countries from outside the European Union and European Economic Area and Switzerland.
  2. EU and Swiss Students: This means all students who are nationals of countries that are members of the European Union and European Economic Area and Switzerland.
  3. Nordic students:This includes students who are nationals of Danemark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
  4. Foreign students residing in Norway: This category includes all foreign applicants residing in Norway on work visa, Study Permit, Protection (Refugee Status), Permanent Residency and long-term Marriage/Family visa

NON-EU CITIZENS: STUDY PERMIT & TRANSFER OF FUND

The Norwegian Directorate of Norwegian Immigration (UDI) requires that you:

I - BEFORE ARRIVAL:

1- Transfer your deposit

Proof of financial ability

Self-funded students from outside the EU/EEA area must transfer their deposit ( proof of financial ability) to the holding deposit account at The Arctic Student Welfare Organisation to be able to apply for a Study Permit within 1 JUNE.

NB!
If you live in Norway, have a Student Residence Permit & own Norwegian bank account, you do not need to transfer any fund to the deposit account at UiT.

2- Apply for Study Permit

Student visa

You must apply for a student visa, known as Study Permit, before entering Norway for study purposes.

The housing guarantee, which is required for applying for Study Permit, is your Letter for Visa Purposes.

II - AFTER ARRIVAL: REGISTRATION AT THE POLICE

You must apply for a Study Permit (visa) before entering Norway. After arriving to Norway, you must register at the local police station within seven days.

The following documents are required by the Police for registration:

  1. Your offer of admission from UiT
  2. Your Housing Contract
  3. Your passport

EU/SWISS CITIZENS: REGISTRATION & INSURANCE

EU/Swiss students who are staying for more than three months in Norway must register at the local police station upon arrival and secure their own insurance coverage

NB!

Students attending Debut WEEK International will be given practical information about the registration at the local police and will be assisted by our volunteers to arrive at the local police station.

NORDIC CITIZENS: REPORT YOUR ADDRESS IN NORWAY

This applies to nationals of Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland. You do not need to apply for a residence permit or register with the Police to live in Norway. All you need to do is to report your move to your new municipality in Norway to the local Tax office or the National Population Registry.

Foreign students residing in Norway on Student Visa: You just need to print out a your financial statement from your local Norwegian bank as proof of financial ability to apply for the renewal of your student residence. If you have already obtained another degree in Norway, you will be asked to write a personal statement to explain why you want to take another degree programme in Norway. Please contact the nearest immigration/police office for further details.


Foreign students residing in Norway on work visa, Protection (Refugee Status), Permanent Residency or long-term Marriage/Family visa DO NOT need to transfer any fund to the deposit account at UiT. All you need to do is to report your move to your new municipality/CITY in Norway to the local Tax office or the National Population Registry.

Applications to renew your Student Permit and work permit at the local Police station must include (and are dependant on) the Study Progression Report issued by your respective faculty confirming your student status and study progress. Students must document satisfactory progress in their studies in order to continue to work part-time.

NB! Please note that the part-time work permit is not automatically renewed, and you must document satisfactory progress in your studies in order to continue to work part-time.

Delayed in your studies?

If you are delayed you must contact your faculty/programme to apply for extension of your study right. The report cannot be issued without an extended study right.
