Scholarships

Supporting mobility, collaboration, and cross-cultural learning across the environmental sciences and humanities.

🎓 Who Is Eligible?

Scholarships are available to students and staff affiliated with the partner institutions of the Ekologos initiative:

  • UiT The Arctic University of Norway (Norway)

  • RV University (India)

  • The Highland Institute (India)

  • State University of Campinas / UNICAMP (Brazil)

  • Institute of Marine Research (Norway)

These scholarships support participation in field schools, summer/winter courses, collaborative research stays, and public engagement initiatives. At this time, the program is not open to applicants outside of the core partner institutions.

🌍 What Do the Scholarships Cover?

Depending on the nature of the exchange or activity, scholarships may include:

  • International travel

  • Accommodation and local transport

  • Subsistence costs (per diem or lump sum support)

  • Research or project-related expenses

  • Supplementary support for high-cost destinations (e.g., Norway)

All funding is coordinated by the sending and receiving institutions in accordance with the Ekologos consortium agreement and UTFORSK guidelines.

✨ Exchange Highlights (2022–2025)

Over the course of the project, scholarships have supported a diverse range of international activities:

🏞 Brazil–Norway Exchange (2024)

Three UNICAMP students undertook a research visit to UiT in Tromsø, participating in joint seminars and receiving supplementary support for high living costs in Norway. Their projects focused on comparative environmental storytelling, Arctic–Amazon ecological imaginaries, and museum ethnography.

🎥 India Summer Film School (2023 & 2024)

RV University and The Highland Institute co-hosted two acclaimed Ekologos Summer Film Schools in Nagaland. These intensive workshops trained students in ethnographic filmmaking, environmental storytelling, and visual ethics. Staff mobility supported co-teaching and guest lectures from Brazil and Norway.

🧭 Wiki Collaboration Workshops (Ongoing)

Faculty and advanced students from RVU, UNICAMP, and UiT are collaboratively developing the Ekologos Wiki — a curated open-access resource on Indigenous ecological knowledge. Mobility funding enabled key planning workshops in person, while digital collaboration continues year-round.

Upcoming: Final Summer School and Conference (2026)

The concluding Ekologos Summer School and International Conference will take place at UiT in Tromsø in late 2026. Selected students and staff from all partner institutions will receive full support to participate and present research or creative outputs.

📝 How to Apply (Internal)

Interested students and staff should:

  • Contact their institutional coordinator

  • Prepare a short proposal or expression of interest

  • Outline the relevance of the exchange to their research, coursework, or project involvement

Each institution oversees its own selection process in consultation with the project coordinator.

Ekologos exchanges are more than mobility — they are opportunities to learn together, to reimagine environmental knowledge, and to build lasting networks of solidarity and scholarship.
