Dr. Piyush Roy is an Indian National Film Award winning critic-columnist, and an international author, curator, filmmaker and professor in film, media and aesthetic studies. Former editor of popular film magazines, Stardust and StarWeek, he has worked at senior reporting positions in The Indian Expressand Hindustan Times, and has been published in The Times of India, The Asian Age, Society, Screen, The New Indian Express and The Hindu, authoring over 1000 media publications and five books. Presently, Dean, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, RV University, Bengaluru, his latest book, Appreciating Melodrama: Theory and Practice in Indian Cinema and Television (Bloomsbury 2022) argues for reviewing Indian cinema using Indian aesthetic philosophies, and latest documentary, The Monarch of the Blue Mountain (2022), explores universal appeals of Jagannath consciousness. A recipient of Sir William Darling Memorial Prize, he is an MA in International Journalism (Cardiff University), MSc in Film Studies and PhD in South Asian Studies (University of Edinburgh). A jury member at various international film festivals and advisory board member of the Global University Film Awards (Hong Kong), he’s Founder-Festival Director of Edinburgh Festival of Indian Films & Documentaries (2016-17).
