STE-3605 Mathematical Modeling and Simulation - 5 ECTS
Course content
This course teaches the students how to build a satellite simulator through a series of tutorial-like lectures with accompanying assignments. Through a series of assignments, the students will be able to model and simulate a satellite operating in an elliptical orbit. Specifically, the course will cover:
- Orbital mechanics
- Sun vector modelling
- Magnetic field modelling
- Attitude determination
- Attitude control
- Actuators
- Thrusters
- Reaction wheels
- Magnetic torquers
- Actuation strategies
- Sensors and sensor noise
Objectives of the course
After passing the course, students will have the following learning outcomes:
Knowledge and understanding:
The candidate:
- has knowledge on how to model translational and rotational dynamics of spacecraft
- has knowledge on how to design an attitude controller for a rigid body
- has knowledge on how to estimate the attitude based on vector measurements
Skills:
The candidate:
- is able to model different components required to build a satellite simulator
- is able to perform simulations in Python
- is able to communicate and discuss advanced concepts
