ENG-2020 English Phonology - 10 ECTS
Course content
Phonological theory wouldn't be as rich and insightful as it is today without the peculiarities and weirdnesses of English phonology. We will learn about the development of phonological theory, focusing on English as the subject of study, discussing which contributions data from English have made to phonological theorizing and which insights phonological theories provide into the workings of the English language and its many varieties. Examples may also be drawn from other languages. We will learn about rule-based phonology from Chomsky & Halle's "Sound Patterns of English" to Lexical Phonology and alternatives, such as Government Phonology and Optimality Theory.
