Optional course in the Master program in music performance. Cannot be taken as a stand-alone course.

Course content

Participation in different ensembles relevant to the student's main instrument. The repertoire can be broad or concentrated in terms of style, genre, and content, and can also include the student's own composition work. Score studies/rehearsal techniques and development of the student's own arrangements can be included according to the project and genre.

Objectives of the course

After completing the course the student will have the following competences:

Knowledge:

  • knowledge of repertoire, performance traditions, and artistic practice within the choice of ensemble specialisation
  • ability to evaluate, realise, and convey their artistic intentions with a clear profile

Skills:

  • ability to perform in ensembles with appropriate and artistic expression
  • ability to take part in and follow instructions in ensemble situations with an emphasis on rehearsal and performance
  • ability to lead an ensemble in rehearsal and performance

Competences:

  • ability to develop stylistic and artistic understanding and expression in different ensembles
  • gain insight into and ability to arrange and take responsibility for the practical organization of concerts and other performances

English and Norwegian

Teaching methods

Regular supervision and instruction will take place with the ensemble(s) after agreement and according to a plan, weekly or in concentrated periods.

The student will develop a project description for the organisation and content of the study and will have independent responsibility for writing their semester plan and planning their repertoire. This responsibility also includes practical organisation such as providing sheet music, booking rehearsal spaces, planning concerts, etc.

The student will normally have one permanent ensemble throughout the duration of the course, but should also take part in other ensembles. In order to acquire experience in leading ensembles, the student can be given supervision tasks with other ensembles at the Academy of Music.

It is possible for the student to work with external ensembles if agreed upon in advance.

Midway performance (20 min) in which the project description will also be presented and evaluated Approved – not approved

Repertoire list consisting of a performance time of 90 minutes Approved – not approved
Submission of the programme of music for the exam and written programme notes Approved – not approved

Re-sit examination

In the case of a fail grade, a resit examination is available in the next semester with reworked or new repertoire. The exam programme must be submitted 4 weeks in advance.
