MUS-3410 Accompaniment - 30 ECTS

Optional course in the Master programe in music performance. Cannot be taken as a stand-alone course.

Course content

The course is relevant for students who play keyboard instruments or guitar in either classical or popular genres. Work with different kinds of accompaniment. Work with soloists and an accompanist will also include the supervision of other students (singers/instrumentalists) both at the bachelor's and master's levels. Participation in concerts.

The student can specialise in a genre, style, period, or choice of musicians.


Objectives of the course

After completing the course the student will have the following competences:

Knowledge:

  • knowledge of repertoire, performance traditions, and artistic practice within the field of accompaniment
  • ability to apply their acquired knowledge to broaden their musical perspective

Skills:

  • ability to perform a repertoire at a professional level together with other musicians
  • ability to supervise other musicians and take responsibility as accompanist when rehearsing new repertoire

Competences:

  • ability to work independently on preparation, rehearsing, and performing concerts together with other musicians

English and Norwegian

Teaching methods

Individual instruction and supervision in accompaniment of singers and other instrumentalists.

At the start of the course the student must, together with the teacher, create a work/semester plan for the contents and organization of the studies, and provide a repertoire list of at least 90 minutes. A significant amount of independent work and practice is expected. The student will organise rehearsals and obligatory agreements with other participants, who can be soloists or ensembles. Participation in public concerts. Midway exam after the first semester.

1. Performances

  • Midway performance (20min)
  • Public participation in at least 2 concert performances with a combined repertoire of at least 30 minutes.

2. Repertoire

  • Submission of a repertoire list consisting of a performance time of 90 minutes
  • Submission of the programme of music for the exam
