spring 2025
PSY-3006 Independent study in psychology - 10 ECTS

Type of course

The course is reserved for students who are admitted to the master's program in psychology and is therefore not intended as a single subject. The course does not fit in the first semester of the Master program.

Registration for the course subject to an approved course description within the specified deadline. Master students send application to the Master Committee.

Course content

Content for independent study should be a topic that is not taught at the Department of Psychology or UiT, and that a professional at the department (course supervisor) has the opportunity to provide guidance in. The work with independent study consists mainly of literature studies, but also other working methods may be included in the course.

For the master's students, the work with independent study can support the work on the master's thesis, but can not be included directly in the master's thesis (as that work is done under the auspices of PSY 3900). The work must extend beyond what would be reasonable to expect as part of the master's thesis, either in breadth or thoroughness.

The student and course supervisor together develop the content for the course with learning outcome descriptions, work requirements, practice, and syllabus. The guidelines from the Faculty of Health Sciences for the content and the learning outcome descriptions can be found with the application in Canvas. Two or more students can use same syllabus for independent study and be supervised together. Students are encouraged to collaborate on a topic of their choice where appropriate.

Objectives of the course

Learning outcomes descriptions are an important part of the contract between you, the supervisor and the examiner. They form the assessment basis for the examiner reading the exam work and should be written according to the requirements of the Health Sciences Faculty (see further in the template for specific information regarding expectations). Ensure that learning outcomes descriptions are (1) at a sufficiently high level to Master's work and (2) that they are concrete.

Language of instruction and examination

English.

The exam can be written in English, Norwegian or other Scandinavian language.

Teaching methods

The course mainly involves self-study. Subject supervisor must say they are willing to give at least 4 hours of supervision in connection with the task, and it is not normally offered more than 15 hours of supervision per topic. Several students can receive guidance together when working on the same topic. If other forms of teaching shall be included it must be specified.
