Multilingual Onset, Variation and Attrition: Language Development and Language Preservation of Ukrainian Refugee Children in Europe (MOVA)

MOVA studies how Ukrainian refugee children (ages 6–16) adapt linguistically, balancing new languages while preserving Ukrainian.

We investigate the grammatical effects of language contact in Ukrainian-speaking children living in Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Norway. We track grammatical changes that occur when children use Ukrainian alongside host country languages, and test how the age at which they begin immersion affects host language learning, first language change, and school foreign language acquisition. We also investigate individual differences (language dominance, proficiency, memory) that influence these processes. The results will inform evidence-based recommendations for educators and policymakers that promote successful language learning and integration while supporting the maintenance of Ukrainian at home.
