Northern Homes

Northern Homes is an interdisciplinary research project initiated by the Department of Technology and Safety at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. The focus of the project is sustainable refurbishment of the many thousands of reconstruction houses, gjenreisningshus, that were built in Northern Norway after the Second World War.

The objective of the main project is to identify solutions for integrating renewable energy sources as a part of the renovation of reconstruction houses, considering sustainability from a social, cultural, environmental, technological, and economic perspective. The reconstruction houses were important when Northern Norway was rebuilt after the war. With the use of sustainable solutions and technology, they can also play an important role in the transition to a sustainable society in the years to come.
