About the project

The project aims to strengthen knowledge about Ukraine in Norway, with particular emphasis on economic growth and investment, Ukraine’s relationship with the EU and the EEA, and accountability for atrocity crimes and human rights violations. Through a variety of diverse activities such as workshops, open lectures, podcasts and policy notes, the project will contribute to increased expertise about Ukraine in Norwegian private and public sectors as well as civil society.

The project consists of three thematic parts.

Investing in Ukraine

The first part concerns the legal regulation of investments in Ukraine which are crucial for Ukraine’s reconstruction. The Norwegian public sector has an important role in facilitating trade and economic cooperation, while Norwegian companies are considering investments and partnerships in Ukraine. This creates a clear need for increased knowledge about Ukraine’s legal system, ongoing economic reforms and the country’s integration into Europe.

Ukraine's relations with EU and EEA

The second thematic part focuses on Ukraine's relationship with the EU and the EEA. The EU plays a key role in coordinating support for Ukraine, while Norway acts as a close partner. Knowledge of the legal and institutional framework for the EU’s foreign and enlargement policy, as well as framework for Norway’s actions through the EEA Agreement, is important. This applies both to established actors and to students who will work on EU and EEA issues in the public and private sectors.

Justice and accountability

A third main part of the project deals with justice and accountability for atrocity crimes and human rights violations committed during the war. Accountability for war crimes and human rights violations requires extensive cooperation between national and international actors. Several legal processes are ongoing in national courts and on international level, with new mechanisms, such as a special court for crimes of aggression, being established. The project contributes to a greater understanding of these processes and Norway’s role in accountability for war crimes and human rights violations during the war in Ukraine.
