The Department of Community Medicine is comprised of a diverse team of over 200 individuals, spanning research and administrative roles, and including both full-time and part-time positions. The Department has eight research groups encompassing research in epidemiology, general practice, health economics, medical humanities, occupational health, welfare medicine and global health.

The research staff are also organized in teaching units, according to their expertise. The teaching units are responsible for organizing the Department’s teaching responsibilities and develop the research staff’s pedagogical competence in collaboration with supporting units at the Faculty and UiT. The teaching units are mainly for internal organization and does not have their own webpages.

We are involved and responsible for four study programs at the Faculty of Health Sciences, as well as PhD courses.

The Department is responsible for four large population-based health studies: the Tromsø Study, the Norwegian Women and Cancer Study (NOWAC), Fit Futures and SAMINOR - the population-based study on health and living conditions in regions with Sami and Norwegian population.

Our Department also hosts three core facilities governing data and biological samples and facilitating access to research data for national and international researchers: EUTRO, the core facility for Biobank and the Administrative Unit for Population-based Health Studies.

Since 2001, our Department has hosted four externally funded research centers, which have specific mandates given by the Ministry of Health. Their obligation is to develop professional knowledge in their respective fields and to conduct research within these areas.
