Two PhD positions on 'Good Integration' (UiT, Tromsø)

Application deadline: 9th August 2021

To apply: https://www.jobbnorge.no/en/available-jobs/job/206159/phd-fellow-in-philosophy

The position

Two PhD positions are available at the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education with the research group "Pluralism, Democracy, and Justice (PDJ)" and the project "Good Integration (GOODINT): Goals and bottlenecks of successful integration and social cohesion".

One of the positions is financed through the Research Council of Norway and is for a period of three years.
The other position is financed by the Department of Philosophy. This position is for a period of three years and full time studies with the possibility of an extension of the appointment period. If the doctoral dissertation is submitted for appraisal within 3 years or within 3,5 year, the PhD candidate is qualified for a completion grant for either 12 or 6 months. The completion grant should be used to further qualification measures such as courses in teaching in higher education, lecturing and other relevant work at the faculty. More information about the completion grant scheme here.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position.

The project

The positions are affiliated with the newly financed research prosject Good Integration (GOODINT): Goals and bottlenecks of successful integration and social cohesion.

GOODINT (2021-2025) project researches notions of equality of opportunity, cultural integration and social cohesion, and their impact on good integration. With focus on three European contexts (Norway/Nordics, UK, and Hungary), GOODINT develops empirically informed theoretical knowledge on good integration: its meaning, value, and means of achieving it.

For more information about the project, see the following website: GOODINT.

Applicants are required to submit a research proposal related to one of more of the following themes:

1.What does successful integration of migrants in European countries amount to? (The definitional question)

2.What, conceptually and empirically speaking, are the main obstacles to successful integration? (The realization question)

3.What is the moral significance of achieving it? (The normative question)

We are especially interested in political philosophical proposals that are problem-oriented and analytically discuss the above issue(s) in relation to a) equality of opportunity, b) cultural integration, or c) social cohesion. We are also open to projects that draw upon relevant empirical research in the social sciences, although the main theoretical framework should be within political philosophy/theory. With respect to relevant empirical contexts, GOODINT focuses on cases of Hungary, Norway/Nordics, and UK in particular.
