No agreement between Wiley and Sikt on a new publishing and reading agreement from 2025
No agreement between Wiley and Sikt on a new publishing and reading agreement from 2025
The national consortium agreement (Sikt) with the publisher Wiley expired on 31.12.2024. Negotiations for a new agreement have been ongoing since spring 2024 through Sikt and Sikt's negotiation council, where key demands have been related to ensuring sustainable price development and the transition to full open access. The publisher has recently announced a final offer that did not meet the negotiation demands and is therefore not accepted by Sikt.
The publishing agreement with Wiley is a so-called 'read and publish agreement' that provides Norwegian researchers and students access to read closed articles and also to publish articles with open access. You can read more about the negotiation process at Openscience.no.
As a member of the consortium, a situation with no agreement with Wiley will also affect UiT The Arctic University of Norway.
What does this mean for you?
Reading access to articles
You can still search for literature as usual, for example in Oria.
All content covered by the agreement until 31.12.2024 will still be available, either because it is Open Access or because UiT retains reading access through archival rights. Other open versions of articles can be found by searching in Oria (check "Include material your library does not have access to"). Another option is to contact the article author or other researchers, for example via social media or research networks – many researchers are happy to share articles with others.
If you still do not get reading access to the relevant article, your library can assist. Search for and order the article in Oria, see the library's help pages for ordering articles.
Publishing
You can still publish in journals published by Wiley.
UiT will continue to cover author fees for publications in open journals, meaning journals where all content is openly available. This is provided they are listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and are approved at level 1 or 2 in the Norwegian Register for Scientific Journals. In such cases, author fees can be covered with support from UiT's publication fund. The application form and more information about the fund can be found here: Portal for publishing and Open Access.
You can publish in closed journals (journals not registered in DOAJ) and make the publication openly available (OA) by self-archiving your manuscript in the Munin repository, in accordance with UiT's rights retention strategy.
For more information, see UiT's portal for publishing.
